What’s Included in Your Sump Pump Maintenance Appointment

Haller’s licensed plumbers inspect and test every component that determines whether your sump pump performs when it needs to.

A sump pump maintenance visit is not a visual check. It covers the full system under operating conditions.

We test the float switch to confirm it activates the pump at the correct water level and shuts off cleanly after the pit clears. A float switch that sticks, activates late, or fails to shut off is the most common cause of sump pump failure during an active rain event.

We run the pump and verify it moves water out of the pit at the correct rate. A pump that starts but cannot keep up with water volume during a sustained storm is not providing real protection. We confirm output under operating conditions, not just that the motor turns on.

We inspect the discharge line for obstructions and verify it terminates far enough from the foundation to prevent pumped water from returning toward the house. We also test the check valve to confirm it prevents backflow into the pit when the pump cycles off.

We inspect the sump pit and liner for cracks, sediment buildup, and debris that can interfere with float switch operation or clog the pump intake. A pit in poor condition compromises pump performance regardless of the quality of the pump itself.

For homes with a battery backup system, we test the backup pump, verify battery charge and condition, and confirm the backup activates correctly when the primary pump cannot keep up or loses power. In Central and Eastern Pennsylvania, where storms that flood basements also knock out power, a backup that has not been tested is not a backup.

Before we leave, we explain what we found in plain language. If the pump is approaching the end of its useful life or a component needs attention before spring storm season, you hear about it at the appointment.

After a heavy rain, our sump pump failed and water backed up into our basement. Within hours of my call, Haller sent out a plumber (Trenton) who diagnosed the problem which required the installation of new PVC pipe. The sump pump system has been working perfectly ever since.

Why You Should Schedule Sump Pump Maintenance with Haller

Scheduling sump pump maintenance with Haller is one of the most direct ways to protect your basement before conditions test it.

A sump pump that has been tested and serviced before storm season is ready to perform when groundwater rises across the Lehigh Valley and Lancaster County. One that has not been checked is a liability every wet spring.

A sump pump that has been load-tested and fully inspected activates correctly and clears the pit at the rate your basement requires. In the Lehigh Valley, where spring runoff from Blue Mountain moves quickly into valley-floor properties, a pump that has not been tested is a liability every wet season.

Small problems caught during a maintenance visit do not become failures during a storm. A float switch that is sticking or a check valve that is not seating correctly are problems you solve on your schedule. The same issues failing during an active basement flood are a different situation.

Sump pumps typically last seven to ten years. Regular service that keeps the pit clear, the float operating correctly, and the discharge line unobstructed reduces the strain that shortens pump life and helps you reach the full service expectancy before replacement.

For homes with battery backup systems, maintenance confirms the backup is actually ready. A backup pump with a weakened battery or a float that has not been tested provides no protection when the primary pump cannot keep up or the power goes out during a storm.

A pump showing signs of wear or a pit liner with cracks found during a scheduled visit costs far less to address than an emergency call after water is already in your basement. Routine maintenance is what keeps manageable problems from becoming expensive ones.

Other Plumbing Services You May Need

Sump pump maintenance is one part of keeping your home’s plumbing protected and reliable.

Haller’s licensed plumbers handle the full range of plumbing services Central and Eastern Pennsylvania homeowners need, from basement water management to water heater care and drain cleaning.

When a sump pump has reached the end of its useful life or fails unexpectedly, Haller’s licensed plumbers replace the unit and inspect the full pit and discharge system before installing the new pump. We also install battery backup systems for homes that need added protection.

Haller provides whole-home plumbing inspections that cover supply lines, drain lines, shutoff valves, and visible connections throughout your home. An inspection is the most direct way to catch developing problems before they become failures across Central and Eastern Pennsylvania.

Haller’s licensed plumbers service tank and tankless water heaters, including sediment flushing, anode rod inspection, and T&P valve testing. Water heater maintenance extends equipment life and keeps operating costs in check.

Slow or backing-up drains signal buildup or root intrusion in your drain lines. Haller’s licensed plumbers clear blockages and restore proper flow throughout your home’s drainage system.

High mineral content in Central and Eastern Pennsylvania groundwater affects more than your pipes and appliances. Haller’s licensed plumbers maintain water softeners to keep your water treatment working correctly and protect the plumbing systems your sump pump works alongside.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sump Pump Maintenance

How often should I schedule sump pump maintenance?

Sump pumps should be inspected and tested at least once a year. The best time to schedule is in late winter or early spring before groundwater levels begin rising across the Lehigh Valley and Lancaster County. If your pump runs frequently or your basement has a history of water intrusion, more frequent service is worth considering. Haller’s licensed plumbers can assess your system and recommend a schedule based on your pit conditions and local water table.

What does Haller’s sump pump maintenance service include?

Our licensed plumbers test the float switch for correct activation and shutoff, run the pump under load to verify output, inspect the discharge line and check valve, check the pit and liner condition, and test any battery backup system installed. We explain all findings before leaving. Every component that determines whether your pump performs during an active rain event gets checked, not just the motor.

Why is sump pump maintenance important if the pump seems to be working?

A pump that starts when you pour water in the pit is not the same as a pump that can sustain output during a multi-hour rain event with rising groundwater. Float switches wear, check valves stop seating cleanly, and discharge lines develop partial obstructions that do not prevent the pump from running but reduce its effective capacity. The only way to know the system is ready is to test it under real operating conditions before the storm arrives.

Can sump pump maintenance extend the life of my pump?

Yes. Keeping the pit clear of debris that can clog the intake, verifying the float switch is operating correctly, and confirming the discharge line is unobstructed all reduce the strain the pump operates under. Sump pumps typically last seven to ten years. Regular maintenance helps you reach the full service expectancy rather than replacing the pump early due to avoidable wear.

How long does a sump pump maintenance appointment take?

Most sump pump maintenance visits take about an hour. If the system includes a battery backup, testing the backup adds time. Haller’s plumbers take the time needed to test the full system properly and walk you through their findings before leaving.
